Common Questions from students

"How much can I earn as a PMU Artist?"

I have good news! If you build a solid client base and manage your costs well, micropigmentation work can be one of the highest-margin services in the beauty industry. Here’s why it’s such a strong business model:

Very Low Consumable Cost per Client

  • Microblading: A blade, a small cup of pigment, numbing cream, a pair of gloves, and disposables. Often £8–£15 total per client.

  • Micropigmentation: Slightly more – a cartridge needle, pigment, barrier film, gloves. Usually £10–£25 per client.

When you’re charging £200–£400 per treatment, the material cost is a tiny fraction of the service price — meaning very high gross profit margins (often 80%+).

 High Ticket Price Services

  • In the UK, brow microblading typically £200–£350 per set, sometimes higher in London or premium salons.

  • Machine micropigmentation for brows, lips, or eyeliner often £250–£500 per procedure depending on area and expertise.

  • Touch-ups and colour boosts 6–18 months later at £80–£150 keep revenue flowing from the same client base.

 Flexible Work Model

  • You can start mobile or in a small beauty room and grow into your own studio.

  • Appointments can be scheduled around your availability, giving you a lot of autonomy.

  • Because each appointment is high value, you don’t need dozens of clients per day to make a living — even 2–3 clients per week at £250 each is a solid side income, and full time can be much more.

Bottom line:
The cost of pigment and needles is tiny compared to your earning potential. With a steady stream of clients and good branding, microblading and micropigmentation are high-margin, scalable, and flexible careers.

"After completing Micropigmentation/Microblading courses how much do we need to invest on tools and starter kit?"

It depends a lot on the scale you want to operate at, how many clients, how fast, how professional, whether you need high-end equipment from start.

Putting all together, here are rough cost ranges for doing a good starter kit after training for each technique.

Microblading Starter Kit Cost & Must Have Tools:

Microblading tool

Blades

Pigments

H&S tools

Basic / Entry-level Good quality, for practice, small client load ~ £100-£250.

This covers blades, pigments, mapping tools, disposables, practice skins etc

Mid-range / Professional Ready for higher paying clients, good quality tools~ £250-£500. Better pigment brands, premium blades, perhaps a higher-end pen or hybrid tool, more aftercare / client-management supplies.

Micropigmentation Starter Kit Cost & Must Have Tools

Machine hand tool

Needle cartidges

Pigments

Basic / Enrty level: You’ll need a basic machine, cartridges/needles, pigments, more disposables, safety equipment etc. .~ £300-£600.
More Professional: Higher quality machine, high-grade pigments, cartridges, better safety gear, more backup materials, maybe multiple needle types etc ~ £700-£1,000.

Next Step:
Licensing and insurance: License price is a yearly fee, prices vary depending on Council and location/area.

Public Liability Insurance is around £20 monthly cost which is very reasonable.

"Do I need to have any PMU qualification/experience to enrol?"

No previous experience needed to start our PMU courses, most of our students are coming from different professional backgrounds, however beauty treatments or basic knowledge about anatomy can help better understanding of the modules and techniques. Artistic skills are also helpful.

"Which PMU Treatment is the most popular? Microblading or Powder Brows? I'm not sure which technique to learn."

Eyebrows are very popular PMU treatments.

Each client is unique and prefer different style, but the real question is: What is the best for my client?

Therefore we should always consider the technique which is the most suitable for their skin type. With Brows both techniques are key treatments. The more high-quality PMU services you can offer, the larger your potential client base will be.

Also a client who comes for Eyebrows might later want lips, eyeliner, freckles, scalp or paramedical PMU. If we can do it all, they will stay with us.

"What price shall I set for my clients after completing my training?"

Before taking on paying clients we recommend to complete a minimum of 10-15 clients to feel confident and especially satisfied with the result of work performed. With each work/skin students will gain even more experience. Starting price vary, can start around £99-150 depending on how confident they feel.

"How do I build my first portfolio?”
With Case studies, practicing on models, friends & family will help you build a portfolio and social media content. A
dvertising as a beginner with reasonable prices, consistent practice work on latex can be a perfect start!

"What if I make a mistake as a beginner during PMU Work?"

It’s normal to feel nervous about mistakes in the beginning, it actually means that we care about others. Always remember — every artist starts somewhere and we are not perfect.

Remember the first session always heals softer and lighter. Most “mistakes” fade enough to correct at the 4–8 week top-up appointment.

Keep Learning

Practice on latex skins, mannequins, and models under supervision to gain confidence.

Each procedure you do builds your muscle memory and reduces mistakes

Clients don’t expect perfection from a beginner, but they do expect honesty, hygiene, and a clear plan. If you’re unsure, you can use our Lifetime Support, always feel free to turn to us for advice before proceeding further.
